The French forward fired Madrid through to the next round of the Champions League
Real Madrid were afraid of being knocked out of the Champions League in the group phase for the first time ever but ended up putting on the best performance of their season to see off Borussia Monchengladbach and finish top of Group B.

It was B for Benzema, with Madrid’s king Karim scoring two headers to guide them through.
The first came from a Lucas Vazquez cross, the second from Rodrygo Goes’s ball, both very similar goals as Gladbach forgot to turn up at the Alfredo di Stefano; maybe they thought the match was at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid could have racked up a big win here, with Benzema hitting the bar, Luka Modric and Vazquez hitting the post, and various other chances going to waste.
It didn’t matter, Madrid were always going to win here, it seemed, from kick-off. They were far too good for the Germans, who looked nothing like the team that drew with Los Blancos a few weeks ago. Well, maybe the side that threw away a two-goal lead at the end of that game to draw 2-2.
“It was a good game for us,” Beznema told Movistar. “Each match is a final and I think that if we always play how we did today, no team can hurt us.
“This was a very difficult game, we started it well and with the desire to show that we are the best.”
