The Welsh winger set up Dani Carvajal’s opener and scored the other as he helped Julen Lopetegui start his first La Liga game with a victory at the Santiago Bernabeu against a limp Getafe.

Bale nearly opened the scoring in the 16th minute when his diving header crashed against the crossbar from Marcelo’s whipped ball in.

The Welshman, who has opened the scoring for Madrid in each of the past three seasons, did help set up their first goal this time around, with a whipped cross which Getafe’s goalkeeper could only push toward’s Dani Carvajal, who cleverly looped a header back over him and into the net.

Madrid thought they had a penalty when Sergio Ramos was shoved over in the box, but the linesman had allowed play to go on instead of flagging for offside, with the video referee confirming it was indeed off.

However in the 51st minute Bale fired home with the ball squeezing past the weak David Soria, and it was good enough for Madrid to see out the rest of the game.

Marco Asensio came close to grabbing a third but struck the post with a fierce effort.

"It was important to start well," said Asensio after the game. "We played a complete game and we have to go step by step. This is the path to go far.

"What happened in the Super Cup happened and we had to turn the page. A new season is starting and we are very hopeful."
