Sergio Ramos scored the winning penalty after Thibaut Courtois denied Thomas Partey in the shoot-out.
Perhaps most crucially, Fede Valverde tripped Alvaro Morata when he was clean through in stoppage time. That might have been the moment that won Madrid the game.
The match itself was poor. Joao Felix dragged an effort wide after Ramos gave the ball away.
Courtois made a good save to keep Morata out after a succulent pass by Kieran Trippier.
When Morata ran through he might have won the game late in extra time but Valverde chopped him down and he was sent off.
Saul hit the post with a penalty before Courtois saved Thomas’s shot, with Ramos netting the decisive kick to win Madrid’s 11th Super Cup.
