Real Betis 1-2 Real Madrid: Ceballos saves Los Blancos at the death

The former Betis midfielder returned to haunt his former employers on Sunday

Dani Ceballos rescued Real Madrid late on as Santiago Solari's side beat Real Betis 2-1 on Sunday to return to the top four in La Liga.

Former Betis midfielder Ceballos scored a free kick in the final five minutes as Madrid won a game in which they had less than 30 percent possession.

Luka Modric gave the visitors an early lead in Seville but it was the home side who enjoyed all of the ball from that point on against a Madrid side missing several players.

Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio are among those currently injured, while Lucas Vazquez was suspended. Karim Benzema was then taken off at halftime with a broken finger.

However, Solari still opted to leave Marcelo and Isco on the bench -- and neither were brought on.

Madrid's mix and match XI were eventually pegged up -- after a VAR review to check if the goal was onside -- when Sergio Canales slotted past Keylor Navas (Thibaut Courtois is also injured).

However, despite the home side's pressure, it was Madrid who stole the points when Casemiro was brought down outside the area by William Carvalho.

Ceballos -- jeered by the Betis fans on his return to the Benito Villamarin -- stepped up and whipped the ball into Pau Lopez's bottom corner.

The Spain midfielder raised his hands to apologise to those fans as Madrid returned to the Champions League spots, moving level on points with third place Sevilla.
