The Norwegian international would rather stay at Real Sociedad, where he's a certain starter, than sit on the bench at the Bernabeu

Martin Odegaard has been one of LaLiga's players of the season for Real Sociedad - and that's part of the reason he'd rather avoid going back to Real Madrid this summer.

The only negative for Odegaard was an unexpected, potentially chronic knee injury which was discovered after the restart. He' was a key driving force behind Real Sociedad's push for a Champions League spot but his - and the team's - form suffered in the final few games of the season.

One option is for Odegaard to go under the knife in an attempt to correct the problem but the youngster is hoping to manage it with rest and a personalised fitness program.

The problem from Real Madrid is that Odegaard is now after regular football and they can't promise him that. They would need to convince the youngster he will be given a chance to establish himself at the Bernabeu or he'll push to remain in San Sebastian for another year.

At the moment Zidane has Casemiro, Modric, Kroos and Valverde as options to play in the three-man midfield. Isco, Asensio, Brahim and Lucas Vazquez all prefer to play further upfield and don't really fit in as central midfielders.

Perhaps much will depend on whether Modric stays in Madrid or searches for another big contract elsewhere. The Croatian will turn 35 in September.
