Los Blancos are hopeful or re-signing the defender this winter

Real Madrid want to re-sign Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso, who was called up for Spain duty on Thursday, in January.

Former Madrid B team defender Hermoso is having a fine season with Espanyol, who are second in La Liga behind Barcelona.

His form has led to Madrid deciding they want to bring him back -- if not in January then next summer. The centre-back's clause if 40 million euros but Madrid, who sold him, are able to sign him 15 million euros, according to Marca.

Espanyol signed Hermoso for 400,000 but only acquired 50 percent of his rights, which is why Madrid can bring him back for relatively cheap.

Los Blancos are looking to add competition for Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos. The versatile Nacho Fernandez and youngster Jesus Vallejo are their current options.

Hermoso is in line to make his Spain debut next week. Luis Enrique's side face Croatia in the UEFA Nations League and Bosnia in a friendly.
