Valverde was sent off late on as Madrid won the Spanish Supercopa vs. Atletico

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane praised Fede Valverde's foul on Alvaro Morata which saw the Uruguayan sent off but prevent the Atletico Madrid striker scoring a goal.

Madrid went on to win the Spanish Supercopa on penalties, with Sergio Ramos scoring the winning spot-kick as Valverde was named Man of the Match.

"He's taken the Man of the Match award and I am delighted for him," Zidane said. "He worked so hard, like everyone. I am sure he will want to share the award with all his teammates.

"At the end of the day, he did what he had to do. It's a bad foul but he had to make it at that moment. He did well. What's important is that he's apologised to Morata because they know each other well."

Zidane has now won 10 trophies as Madrid boss. Aside from the La Liga title in 2017, all the other nine trophies have been one in cup finals. He's never lost a cup final, in fact.

"I don't know why, it's just this club," he said of the success. "We always want to win. This one wasn't easy. We had to have patience. At half time we were a little annoyed because we didn't know how we could score. We were up against a good team. You have to believe until the end and that's what we've done."
