Luka Modric is hit with a one-match ban following his opening weekend red card

The Real Madrid midfielder, alongside Jorge Molina, were both sent off for fouls on the opponent's Achilles

The Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) committee have handed one-match bans to both Luka Modric (Real Madrid) and Jorge Molina (Getafe). They were both sent off in the opening weekend of action for challenges on the Achilles of Denis Suárez (Celta) and Thomas Partey (Atlético Madrid) respectively.

Real Madrid's arguments against the sending off were dismissed and the ruling was upheld. "Leaving aside the player's intentions, which are irrelevant, the footage proves it was an illegal challenge and confirmed the referee's decision was right."

Oscar Rodriguez (Leganes) and Joel Robles (Real Betis) will both serve suspensions for straight red cards. Francis Coquelin (Valencia) and Renan Lodi (Atlético Madrid) picked up two yellow cards and won't be available for their team's second round matches.
