Luka Modric being investigated for giving false evidence in a trial
The Madrid midfielder gave evidence in a case against Zdravko Mamic last week
However, he changed his original story to favour Mamic which has roused suspicion
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is being investigated Croatia State Attorney Office for perjury after changing his testimony in the trial against Zdravko Mamic.
According to Croatian media 'index.hr', the Croatia State Attorney Office in Osijek announced that it's opened an investigation against Modric on the grounds that he gave a false testimony.
The Croatia State Attorney Office allege that Modric lied by changing his testimony to make it more favourable for Mamic, with whom he signed a civil contract when he was 14.
His declaration was in relation to his transfer from Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham and surrounding where the money from the deal ended up.
A statement said it's understood that there is an "existence of reasonable doubt that when [Modric gave a] testimony before the County Court in Osijek [he] committed a crime against justice by giving false testimony under Article 305, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code / 11. (6th 19th 2017).
"[Modric] was warned that a witness is obliged to tell the truth and that is giving a false statement offence; examined as a witness falsely testified that the annex to the agreement.”
The dispute centres around a contract between Dinamo and Modric which contained an annex stating the fee was to be shared on a 50-50 basis between the club and the player.
Mamic was Dinamo's chief executive and negotiated the deal, but the prosecution are looking into if the annex was signed and backdated after the deal -- Modric initially said yes, but has not changed his testimony.
Modric left Zagreb in 2008 for Tottenham in exhchange for 21 million euros and in 2012 signed for Real Madrid for 30 million euros.
