"I was looking for recognition from the world of football and trying to improve"

Former Portuguese footballer Luis Figo has explained once again his reason for leaving Barcelona for Real Madrid.

In an interview with Marca, he said the controversial decision was taken because he wanted to improve in every possible way.

"When you make a change you always think it will be for the best," he said. "The first logical change I made was to [change] countries. I was very young and I did it for a new experience and for more prestige.

"With the second change [Barça to Madrid], I was looking for recognition from the world of football and trying to improve in every possible way, financially and also with titles.

"And going to Inter, the next change, was in search of happiness playing football."

During the same interview, Figo said that current Madrid captain Sergio Ramos deserves to win a Ballon d'Or. The award has not been won by a defender since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
