Karim Benzema respons to criticism in interview with Vanity Fair and highlights Florentino Perez's support of him in the 'Valbuena case'

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has responded to criticism he has received for his goal drought.

"I don't care if my name is in the newspapers, that means nothing," Benzema told Vanity Fair in an interview.

"What I don't like is when they attack me when I play well but don't score. I play for those who value what I do on the pitch. Those who come to the stadium to whistle will whistle, I'm not going to change their mind. The best players are always criticised. We sell newspapers. "I play football, I'm always here to help my teammates and to try and win everything.

"I think a lot when I'm on the pitch. It's as if I have a computer in my head, before I touch the ball I need to see what the other players can do. But the fans are the fans. They are part of football."

Benzema also had words of gratitude for his club's president Florentino Perez.

"It was a dream for me to meet someone like him. He is very calm and very nice. He asked me if I wanted to play at Real Madrid and I said yes. I gave him my word and that's that. He is with me in the good times and the bad. And I know that he is my president, that he is like family to me. When the (Mathieu) Valbuena case happened and I went to prison for a day and I returned to Madrid feeling very sad, Florentino waited for me at Valdebebas (Madrid's training ground) and gave me a lot of support."
