Espanyol 2-1 Real Madrid: De Tomas and Vidal goals down Los Blancos

Madrid suffered their first defeat in LaLiga this season on Sunday against Espanyol in Barcelona

Raul de Tomas and Aleix Vidal were on target as Esanyol beat Real Madrid 2-1 to end their unbeaten start to the season in LaLiga.

Karim Benzema pulled one back for Madrid but Carlo Ancelotti's side could not find an equaliser in a pulsating finale.

The defeat comes just days after Madrid were stunned by Sheriff in the Champions League.

Espanyol were good value for the three points in the end. They took the lead in the 17th minute when De Tomas turned home a near-post cross against his former side.

Former Barca player Vidal doubled their lead on the hour mark when he rushed into the area before beating Thibaut Courtois.

Sergi Darder should have made it three minutes later, but he shot wide when one-on-one with the Belgian goalkeeper.

It looked like Espanyol could pay dearly for Darder's miss when Benzema, who had already had a goal disallowed for offside, beat three players before firing home.

Madrid then thought they'd equalised when Benzema teed up substitute Eden Hazard to fire home, but the flag had gone up against e French forward in the build-up.

Courtois came up for a late corner as Madrid pushed for a point but Espanyol held strong to secure their second win of the campaign.
