The right-back was one of the stars of Madrid's 2-0 derby win on Saturday

Dani Carvajal returned to Real Madrid's lineup on Saturday with a starring role in the 2-0 derby win against Atletico Madrid.

The right-back hit the post in the second half with the ball ending up in the back of the net after bouncing off Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Beyond his own display, Carvajal was delighted with the team performance and how Madrid pressed Atletico back.

"We had a tough week, Sevilla away, the final against Borussia and Atletico and we have got nine points from nine, but this doesn't stop here," he said.

"On Tuesday we have another really important game and we will try to keep the run of results going.

"The key to beating Atletico was that we went for the game. We pushed forward, we drowned them in their own half and moved the ball well in the final third. Even so, they still had two good chances.

"It is still very early in La Liga but we knew if we lost against Atletico, we would be a long way back. So the win is very important. Now we need to keep it going against Athletic."

Asked why Madrid have struggled at times this season, he said: "It's difficult to know. It's an unusual season, with no preseason and a lot of injuries. The more games we play, the closer we are to our best, though."
