Tensions spilled over in the 18th minute after a foul on Benzema

Referee Fernandez Borbalan did not even book Atletico's Correa

Whatever the result, derby matches between Real and Atletico Madrid are always tense. There's no shortage of action and clashes between the players, which makes it difficult for the match officials.

And in the first-ever derby at Atletico's new Wanda Metropolitano home, played on Saturday, it didn't take long for things to threaten to spiral out of control. In the 18th minute, Juanfran fouled Benzema. The French striker stayed on the floor, while Correa struck the ball at the Madrid player with some power, striking his head.

It was an ugly action and led to both sets of players quickly surrounding the referee, Fernandez Borbalan, who tried to restore the peace.

Fortunately, things ended there. Benzema was seen to and was able to carry on playing without any damage. But the surprise was that the referee did not even show Correa a yellow card for his moment of madness.

Shortly after, Fernandez Borbalan did book a player, albeit Madrid's Dani Carvajal for a foul on Lucas.
