The Welsh forward has been speaking to BT Sport

After six years at Real Madrid, Gareth Bale has learned to live with the whistles at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Wales forward has been jeered throughout his time at the club, despite scoring important goals, but they have increased in recent weeks.

Bale was jeered when he came off the bench against Real Sociedad following his actions after Wales qualified for Euro 2020. He had celebrated behind a flag which stated: 'Wales. Gold. Madrid. In that order.'

In an interview with BT Sport, reproduced in the Daily Mirror, Bale's spoken about the treatment he has received from his own fans.

"I think the first time it happened [being booed], it was a bit of a shock," he said. I didn't really know how to deal with it. But as I've got older, it's happened one or two more times and you understand how to deal with it.

"Now I just shrug it off. In way, with respect it's the best place to get whistled if you don't perform which I understand. Obviously I have to just keep working hard and keep proving to the fans what I can do. Eventually the whistles do stop and you get on with your career like normal."

WINK TO MOURINHO

Bale was also asked about the appointment of Jose Mourinho at his former club, Tottenham, and gave the Portuguese coach a ringing endorsement.

"Having Mourinho there is an amazing statement from the club, I think he's a serial winner," he said. "Tottenham want to win trophies and I don't think there's a better partnership than Mourinho and Tottenham together to try and win some trophies."
