The Senegalese defender is their first option if Raphael Varane leaves in the summer

Real Madrid, looking to refresh their squad, may end up needing to replace Raphael Varane if he leaves in the summer. Their main target is Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese was once on Barcelona's wish list but for now, Napoli have refused to sell him. The defender is interesting Madrid but Napoli's conviction to keep him remains.

If Florentino Perez wants to sign Koulibaly, he will have to pay his 150m euro release clause. Koulibaly signed on until 2023 and the Italian club are under no pressure to sell.

"He's not leaving here in any way," said Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti, formerly of Real Madrid.

Koulibaly signed from Genk in 2014 for only 7m euros and has become fantastic in Italy. However if Varane goes, then Madrid will not, per Corriere dello Sport, baulk at his 150m euro fee and will pay it.
