Dani Carvajal saved the visitors at Mendizorroza, after Sergio Ramos had sent them ahead but then thrown away the lead by giving away a penalty, finished by Lucas Perez.
Alaves might have had a penalty early on when Aleix Vidal was brought down by Eder Militao in the area but the referee did not award a spot kick.
Gareth Bale headed agains the post early on, in his only contribution on his first start since the flag incident during the international break.
Madrid broke the deadlock in the second half when Ramos headed home Toni Kroos’s perfect free-kick.
But under 15 minutes later Alaves levelled after Ramos elbowed Joselu in the area. Perez sent Alphonse Areola the wrong way from the penalty spot.
However Carvajal reacted quickest when Fernando Pacheco parried Isco’s header onto the post and the defender tucked in the rebound, just his fourth ever La Liga goal.
