An official statement from the club confirmed that the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on extending his contract

It's official: Rafa Benitez won't be at Newcastle United next season. The Spanish coach and chairman, Mike Ashley, were unable to come to terms on a new contract and he'll leave his role on the 30th June. Benitez's staff will also leave the English club.

The relationship between Benitez and the chairman has been frosty almost since day one. Despite being loved and respected by the team's passionate fan base, money issues were at the centre of boardroom problems. The promises which were broken and expecting minor miracles season after season appear to be too much for the illustrious former Valencia coach.

Newcastle United's statement came just hours after club legend Alan Shearer slammed the lack of communication with supporters following takeover talks. "The only thing official we have heard from the club this summer is, ‘We are putting season ticket prices up five per cent’ and ‘This is our new home kit'."

It remains to be seen what Benitez - and Newcastle's - next move will be.
