Manchester City midfielder's contract expires in the summer and could leave the club for free

Pep Guardiola told a press conference that Ilkay Gündogan's future "depends on him and his agent" as the German international enters the final months of his contract at Manchester City and with Barça showing a lot of interest in the midfielder.

Gündogan was Guardiola's first signing for City in 2016 and has made almost 300 appearances for the club. But his time in the Premier League could be coming to an end as Gündogan's contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign and Guardiola has opened the door for him, should the player wish to leave.

The 32-year-old has been linked with Barça and Bayern Munich in recent months, although before the game against Nottingham Forest, Guardiola appeared to imply he would like his captain to stay in Manchester beyond the summer.

"I think I know my opinion on that, it's fine. With what Ilkay did against Aston Villa (on the final day of) last season, he can do whatever he wants, he has the paradise already," the City boss joked. "So he knows exactly my opinion of him. The club knows and it's a question for him and his agent," Pep said.

"What is going to happen I’m pretty sure is going to be good for him. Really we want how he is behaving, how he has behaved all his life in Manchester but what is going to happen? This kind of thing belongs to the club and the player," he concluded.
