Both sides had played in the Champions League in midweek -- Chelsea against Barcelona and United at Sevilla -- so tiredness was not an excuse for either.

Chelsea took the lead through Willian once again, the Brazilian having scored the opening goal against Barça at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

However, United were level by hald time thanks to a goal from striker Romelu Lukaku.

A tight affair was then won by the home side when substitute Jesse Lingard scored in the 75th minute, heading in Lukaku's cross.

United moved back ahead of Liverpool into second place on 59 points, while Chelsea remain fifth on 53 points with 10 games to go this season.

"It is not special because it is Chelsea, it is very special as we beat the champions, who are a fantastic team, who are very difficult to beat and because this is the three points that keep us in second place, which is the place we are fighting for," said Mourinho of the win against his former side.

"It opens a little gap, not much to Chelsea, and it is a very important result for us. It feels special as the players gave everything. It is not possible to win against a team with the quality of Chelsea without the quality we gave."

Conte said: "We had a great chance to get a good result against Manchester United, but instead we talk about a defeat.

"You must be the best team at the end of the game, not just in the first half. We had a great chance to take three points here. Now we have to start to work this season as the league is very difficult and we need to fight for a place in the Champions League. I hope the players realise this soon."
