This time, they didn’t slip up. Five years after Steven Gerrard fell over and ruined their title chances against Chelsea at Anfield, Liverpool were able to wreak some kind of vengeance.

They moved back to the top of the Premier League table, two points ahead of Man City having played a game more, after two goals in two minutes saw them beat Chelsea.

A tight first half blew open in the second, with Sadio Mane heading in from Jordan Henderson’s cross before Mohamed Salah scored a rocket strike from distance.

Eden Hazard hit the post and had another effort saved as Chelsea looked to fight back but Liverpool had too much for the Blues in the end.

“I had the best view [of Salah’s goal],” Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp told the BBC.

“I saw earlier than most people that it would go in. What a finish, what a shot. But the whole move around it. Wow, brilliant.

"In the first half we played against the wind, in the second half we had the wind at our backs. So we used that obviously. Then at 2-0 up, there was a little system change from the opponent, with Hazard moving to the left and Higuain upfront.

"But then we are completely on our bikes from 70 minutes, defending, tackling, counter-attacking. Then they had three moments but Alisson was there. He saved our life in those moments."
