The Supercup can be a turning point for Barcelona

The Spanish Super Cup is a triple challenge for Xavi. Logic and statistics show Real Madrid are clear favourites in Wednesday’s semi-final. But the coach is resisting throwing in the towel before even starting. Despite the numbers. Barcelona are sixth in La Liga, Madrid first, with 17 points of difference. Barcelona have won just eight games out of 20, Madrid 15.

In attack, there is no comparison. Benzema and Vinicius have scored 29 goals between them, while all Barcelona players together have just 31. With Messi and Griezmann leaving, they have lost 60 goals. That is having a big impact on the team and their chances of winning trophies.

However they are taking on this Super Cup with hope. The coach believes it could be a chance to make it a turning point in the season. He has three objectives. Win his first title as Barcelona coach. End the bad run against Madrid (four defeats in four Clasicos). And restore the team to good morale. It’s not the most important tournament but this Barcelona needs positive stimulus. Beating a superior Madrid would be a big achievement. Going on to win the title would be a boon for a squad that has become accustomed to losing.

Xavi has a lot of players out still and many doubts in the line up. But the chance of getting players like Ansu Fati back too. A luxury reinforcement.
