Barcelona signing Aguero does not represent a project with a future

Barcelona's record against the other two teams in the title race in La Liga is distressing: three games, three defeats. Pending what happens in the home game against Atletico Madrid on May 8, these results demonstrate Barça's weaknesses against the 'big teams.' Its a weakness that has also been shown in the Champions League, with defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Barça are a team in construction and Ronald Koeman's leading them out of a deep crisis. There's a big future but there are also certain weaknesses. Especially in attack. They lack a goalscorer to take the weight of Lionel Messi. Neither Antoine Griezmann (14 goals in 42 games) nor Ousmane Dembele (10 goals in 37 games) are as effective in attack as the team needs them to be. A team that wants to win the league needs a No.9 that guarantees goals.

That should be Barça's main objective for next season: to sign a Pichichi. The dream is Erling Haaland. The alternative is Lautaro Martinez. And the Plan C, Harry Kane. But Joan Laporta has another candidates: Sergio Aguero. Even though the Argentine could come for free as his contract with Manchester City is expiring, it's an option that does not convince coach Koeman.

The Dutchman feels Messi's friend no longer has the level to play for Barça. This season, between injuries and coronavirus, he's only played 15 games (six as a starter) and has scored three goals. That's not the 'killer' needed. Aguero, in addition, is about to turn 33 years of age and doesn't represent a signing for the future. Haaland at 20 and Martinez at 23 would, of course.

That's without even speaking about the salary the City striker would want: €10 million net per season. Barça can't fall into the same old mistakes of the past. If they want to build an ambitious project, they must bet on the best. And Kun no longer is. Maybe he was a while ago, but the years (and the physical problems) have taken their toll. Signing Aguero only to make Messi happy (and to stay at the club) would be a nonsense.
