The forward doesn't want to become a distraction as Barcelona choose a new president

Barcelona play in Pamplona against Osasuna on March 6 and on March 7 the elections will take place at Camp Nou to choose a new president.

On that day, players like Messi, Pique, Busquets and Sergi Roberto will be able to go and vote if they have not already requested a postal vote.

Of those that have already taken a decision about whether they will go and vote at Camp Nou is Lionel Messi. The Barcelona captain will keep himself on the sidelines and avoid any type of speculation about his preferred candidate.

Messi doesn't want to interfere and the best way to do that is by staying at home. Whoever then wins the elections will then have to phone Leo on the Sunday or Monday because they've all said speaking to him about his future is their priority.

From that moment, negotiations will begin to try and convince Messi to extend his contact at Barça beyond the end of the current season.

For Messi, the financial side of the offer is important but not decisive. The priority for him is that sporting project gives him chances of success over the next two years.

He does not want to be consulted over if they should sign this player or that player, he wants to see a solid plan. That's all. If the project convinces him, a financial agreement will fall into place.

A very different scenario is that given the club's cash problems, the new president doesn't feel it's possible or beneficial to keep paying Messi. If that happens -- something all three candidates have said will not -- then Messi would look elsewhere. Leo can only leave Barça through the front door and to one day come back. But no, no... Never let him leave ever!
