The Catalans beat Rayo 2-1 and reached the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey

There was a time, fortunately long ago, in which Barca was not accustomed to winning leagues. Much less, Champions Leagues. There was a time in which any trophy was celebrated as a great conquest. Including the Gamper. There was a time when the Copa del Rey could justify a season. And save coaches. And presidents. Luckily that time is history. History in black and white, sad history of a loser Barcelona.

Everything has changed, for over three decades. Since Cruyff landed as coach and created the dream team. They won the first European Cup at Wembley, and four leagues in a row. And since then Barcelona have never (well, nearly never) stopped winning. Now they don’t celebrate minor trophies. Not even doubles. The new generations are accustomed (badly) to winning everything. Only the Champions League motivates them. A Champions League that has resisted Barca since 2015.

For that reason, losing the Spanish Super Cup was no trauma. It hurt, but only a little. And the Copa doesn’t generate too much excitement either, writing after Barca beat Rayo 2-1. Although, it is the most accessible title for Koeman to win this season. The shortest route to a trophy, as he has recognised itself. La Liga is impossible, for Atletico’s advantage, and knowing that the Champions League is a delusion, the Copa could be the only joy for Barcelona in 2021. A small joy, but a joy. And more if they play like they did in Vallecas. They lacked goals. An endemic problem in this Barca. But they played excellent football. That said, they suffered, like almost always. With a comeback needed. Something we’re growing used to this season. It’s clear they want the cup, but it won’t be easy to win it.
