Atletico Madrid have finally confirmed what until now had been an open secret: the signing of teenage forward Joao Felix from Benfica.
"Atletico and Benfica have reached an agreement over the transfer of Joao Felix," the Rojiblanco said in a statement on Wednesday. "The 19-year-old has signed a contract for the next seven seasons."
The news comes almost a week after Benfica first revealed to the stock market they had received an offer from Atletico for 126 million euros, six million more than they will get for Antoine Griezmann.
Joao Felix becomes the most expensive signing in the Madrid club's history, taking that tag from Thomas Lemar, who they paid Monaco 70 million for last summer.
Last season saw the teenager make 43 games in all competitions for Benfica, scoring 20 goals and setting up 11 more.
Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United also wanted the Portugal international, but Diego Simeone managed to win the race this time.
