The Croatian and Real Madrid midfielder was crowned the best player at the tournament despite his country finishing as runners up

The Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, who also plays for Real Madrid, has won the Golden Ball after being chosen as the best player at the World Cup in Russia. Modric, like Lionel Messi in 2014, received the award despite his country losing the final to France (4-2).

The World Cup ended on a sad note for Modric who couldn't conquer Russia because of the powerful French side standing in his way.

At 32, reaching the end of his career as a footballer and possibly competing in his last World Cup, he wasn't able to lead Croatia to the ultimate glory despite his own personal achievements.

His situation is similar to that of Leo Messi in 2014. He needed to collect the Golden Ball following Argentina's loss to Germany, the same fate which bestowed Modric.

Modric surpassed Dario Simic's record for most appearances at the World Cup, a total of 12 matches in total, and finally gets an individual award for the high level of performances he's produced over the last three years.

Losing finals isn't something Modric is used to as he's won every single one he's played in for Real Madrid.
