Barcelona focusing on signing a top, top striker

The main target is Erling Haaland but there are others being looked at

| sport

Barcelona’s planning is becoming clearer. They wanted Neymar back but in the end he renewed his deal with PSG. Haaland is now the target No 1 and they are hopeful of getting him from Borussia Dortmund. Lautaro Martinez will be the Plan B, with a lack of consensus over Harry Kane, who is willing to come to Camp Nou.

They know they have to take the team under a second revolution after last summer. Important decisions were made following the Bayern debacle but there was not enough money to fully refresh. Now is the moment to step it up.

Barcelona are planning to reinforce in each section of the team. At the back at least two players will come in. Eric Garcia, and a full back, or another centre-back.

In the middle, they want a young Busquets-like player, who can arrive for low cost.

And up front, there will be changes because Barcelona need goals. They are negotiating with Kun Aguero, and Memphis Depay is nearly done. Barca wanted a No 9 but Neymar’s interest stopped that. But now Laporta has his hands free and is working on reinforcing the team with a striker who could mark an era.

Haaland is that man. Barca know it won’t be easy. His clause next summer of 75 million euros could make it easier for them to get him for 130m euros this summer. The player’s salary in theory won’t be a problem, but there is a lot of competition.

Lautaro has changed agents but Barca are still on top of his situation. They know he would still like to come and more if Leo Messi renews his deal. And Inter don’t mind selling Haaland is preferred but Lautaro is also valued.

Kane’s people have spoken to Barcelona but there is no consensus at the club because of the difficulty English players have when adapting to Spain. Decisions will be made soon, but a top striker is coming.
