The English winger netted the first and then set up Phil Foden for the second.
"The first half it could have been two or three-nil but we knew they’d be a difficult team to break down,” said Sterling.
“We knew we’d have to be patient at times, they came out with a great fighting spirit but we knew if we stayed to our game plan and kept playing our football, more chances would come and that’s definitely what happened."
City are top of Group C with six points.
Guardiola said, of Foden: "He has incredible finishing and made an incredible step forward tonight.
"I am so sorry for him - he deserves to play more minutes. I am sure he will contribute and help us more."
