Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham: Klopp conquers Champions League

Goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi did the job for the Reds

Mohamed Salah’s controversial second minute penalty and Divock Origi’s late strike earned Liverpool their sixth Champions League trophy in a disappointing final against Tottenham in Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Liverpool took the lead after Sadio Mane’s cross was adjudged to have been handled by Moussa Sissoko just inside his box after 29 seconds.

Referee Damir Skomina pointed to the spot and Salah slotted home, making up for his disappointment in last year’s final when he was injured by Sergio Ramos and subbed off as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev.

Perhaps it was the Madrid heat or a three week break since the last time these teams played, but a slow encounter in the Spanish capital rarely raised spectators’ heart-rates.

Liverpool full backs Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson came closest with decent shots in a dour first half. Perhaps a scantily-clad pitch invader was the most entertaining moment.

After the break the game improved as the heat level dipped, with James Milner firing wide while Alisson denied Heung Min Son and Lucas Moura, although Harry Kane was still nowhere to be seen on his return from injury after two months out.

Alisson made his best save from Christian Eriksen’s free-kick in the 85th minute before Origi killed it in the 87th, firing home from an angle after a corner was badly cleared.
