UEFA launch investigation into PSG's summer spending
UEFA will investigate whether the signings of Neymar and Mbappé breach financial fair play regulations
If the investigation concludes that PSG have breached the rules, the club could be expelled from the Champions League
UEFA have issued a statement reporting that it has opened a “formal investigation” into PSG “as part of its ongoing monitoring of clubs under Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations”.
“The investigation will focus on the compliance of the club with the break-even requirement, particularly in light of its recent transfer activity”. PSG have signed Neymar for €222 million and loaned the Monaco forward Kylian Mbappé, with an option to buy the player €180 million.
“In the coming months, the Investigatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body will regularly meet in order to carefully evaluate all documentation pertaining to this case,” UEFA said.
Among the things that UEFA will investigate is whether the purchase option in the Mbappé deal is compulsory, in which case the €180 would have to be included in the accounts for 2017/18 and not the following season as PSG claim.
If the investigation concludes that PSG have breached the rules, they could be docked points in the French league and suspended from European competitions.
