The Uruguayan striker was tasked with finding out about Leo's availability last summer

Diego Pablo Simeone, the Atletico Madrid coach, revealed he was interested in Lionel Messi last summer. In an interview with Ole he said he called Luis Suarez “to ask him how Messi was, if he was excited or had even the minimum chance off coming to Atletico”. The coach said the topic “lasted three hours” because PSG were obsessed with him.

Simeone lamented that there was no chance to coach him or even play with him. “Leo was always at Barcelona and I, at Atletico. Also in the national team we did not coincide as players.”

He added: “If they ask me where Messi should play, I’d say at a team that wants to win. In a team that knows what it has to do to win. It doesn’t matter where he plays, it matters that the team is prepared to win.”
