The striker's last ever game will be in Japan at the end of August

Fernando Torres, a key figure in the history of Spanish football, has announced that August 23 will be his last game as a professional, but promised to return to the sport in another capacity in the future.

"I think I will do something related to football because it's my life," Torres said in a press conference in Tokyo.

The former Atletico Madrid striker, who is currently playing for Sagan Tosu in Japan, will hang up his boots after the game against Andres Iniesta and David Villa's Vissel Kobe in two months time.

"I've listened to my body," the 35-year-old added. "Physically and mentally, I have not been at the high standards I have always set myself. I [am not] enjoying [football] as much as before and I think the most honest thing to do is to leave now.

"I feel very proud of everything I've achieved and for all the teams I've played for and the great opponents I've faced. I've been lucky enough to have played for some of the best teams in the world and to win some of the most important trophies so I feel lucky."

As well as Atletico, Torres played for Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan before moving to Japan, and was a part of the most successful ever Spain team, winning the World Cup and two European Championships.
