Villarreal frontman Unal scored twice in the final 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute as Atletico Madrid were beaten 2-1 at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
The defeat leaves Atletico 11 points behind Barca, who beat Athletic Club 2-0 earlier in the day.
Atletico had started the game well and took the lead when Antoine Griezmann slotted home from the penalty spot.
Diego Simeone’s side looked on track to keep within eight points of Barca and began to shut up shop, with Greizmann one of the players sacrificed.
But then Unal appeared, striking in the 82nd and 90th minute to earn Villarreal the points in their battle for a Europa League spot.
There was still time for Vitolo to be sent off in stoppage time as Atletico’s title hopes went up in smoke.
