Villarreal return home with no points after travelling to Alaves on Wednesday

Alaves eased past Villarreal in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday at the Estadio de Mendizorroza. Both sides arrived in good form, having secured victories in their previous matches. Alaves were keen to hang onto their position at the top of league and extend their winning run, following a 1-0 victory against Huesca. Villarreal were looking to extend their winning run after a 5-1 victory against Levante. At the moment, Alaves are in 16th place on the table and has 30 points while Villarreal sit in 6th with 49 points after 31 matches.

Alaves started the first half well, thanks to Joselu giving Alaves the lead, on 17 minutes. They then managed to see out the first half 1-0.

The Yellow Submarine fought back, with an early goal from Paco Alcacer in the 50th minute. The glorious one in turn, then responded, 80 minutes in increasing their lead with an effort from Edgar Mendez and seeing the game end 2-1.

For Alaves, Edgar Mendez, Pere Pons, Facundo Pellistri and Deyverson, came on for Samuel Chukwueze, Dani Parejo, Mario Gaspar, Paco Alcacer and Etienne Capoue. Villarreal brought on Moi Gomez, Francis Coquelin, Ruben Pena, Yeremi Pino and Fer Nino, to replace Samuel Chukwueze, Dani Parejo, Mario Gaspar, Paco Alcacer and Etienne Capoue.

There were bookings for Manu Garcia and Edgar Mendez from Alaves, and Alfonso Pedraza, for Villarreal.

Alaves will next travel to Eibar, while Villarreal will face Getafe at home.
