The players's union is pleased that the game has been called to a halt on safety grounds

The Spanish footballers' association (AFE) has congratulated itself on getting La Liga and the Segunda suspended because of the coronavirus.

AFE president David Aganzo and secretary general Diego Rivas had a meeting with the RFEF and La Liga on Thursday. The players' union did not want matches to take place behind closed doors and instead hoped they would be suspended while Spain and the world at large battles the Corona Crisis.

"The AFE focused in the meeting on the protection of the players's health and their personal and professional people around them. For that we think they should take prevention measures in training," said the AFE.

Earlier in the week they reacted to the news that games would still be going ahead without fans.

“We have asked for the suspension of all games in all divisions for both genders,” said the AFE in a statement.

“Given the situation, we have made this request thinking exclusively about the health of the players, who collectively we represent.”
