Michel's side made it third time lucky in the playoffs on Sunday

They join Almeria and Real Valladolid in promotion to the Primera

Girona are back in LaLiga after three years away after beating Tenerife 3-1 in the second leg of the playoff final on Sunday.

After a goalless draw in Catalonia last week, Girona, who finished sixth to Tenerife's fifth in the regular season, upset the odds on the Canary Islands to return to the top flight of Spanish football.

It was third time lucky for Girona, who lost in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons following relegation from LaLiga in 2019.

Veteran striker Cristhian Stuani gave them a 42nd-minute lead from the penalty spot, but Carlos Ruiz Arenaga drew the home side level just before the hour mark.

Girona restored their lead through a Jose Leon own goal in the 68th minute and sealed the win with 10 minutes to play when impressive young defender Arnau Martinez found the back of the net.

The lineup for LaLiga next season is now finally complete, with Michel's side joining Almeria and Real Valladolid as one of the three promoted sides.

It is the third time Michel has taken a side up from the Segunda Division, having done the same with Rayo Vallecano and Huesca.

It capped a memorable day for sport in Girona, with their basketball side also promoted to the top division in Spain.
