Valladolid were relegated from LaLiga on the final day of the season

Real Valladolid were relegated from LaLiga on Sunday despite reaching 40 points with a 0-0 draw against Getafe, with all other results failing to go their way.

The team presided over by Brazil great Ronaldo will join Espanyol and Elche in the second division next season, the two other teams to drop out of the Spanish top flight.

From the start Getafe, who would have been relegated on Sunday instead of Valladolid if they lost, made it clear that they were in no hurry to play and that the pressure was on the home side.

In fact, six teams could have gone down on Sunday, with Celta Vigo, Almeria, Cadiz and Valencia also at risk.

However, it would have taken a rare set of results for Valencia, who drew at Real Betis, to go down, while Celta won 2-1 against Barcelona to secure their top flight status for another year.

Cadiz did the same by drawing with Elche, which meant that Getafe and Almeria were the sides in danger if Valladolid could get a result.

And while Valladolid and Getage remained goalless, the picture at the bottom did change as Almeria found themselves 2-1 and 3-2 down at already-relegated Espanyol.

A late penalty, converted by Embarba, earned them a point, though, and meant that if Valladolid could not find a winner, they would be relegated.

And so it proved, with Valladolid missing a late chance through Gonzalo Plata as they dropped into the second tier, Getafe and Almeria staying up on the final day.
