Real Madrid weathered a first-half storm and were grateful to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as they beat Getafe 3-0 on Saturday to kick off 2020 with three points.

A first-half own goal from David Soria and second-half efforts from Raphael Varane and Luka Modric were enough for Zinedine Zidane's side to move top of La Liga ahead of Saturday's Catalan derby.

The second half started favourably for Real Madrid, with a goal from Raphael Varane 53 minutes in the game. Later, Real Madrid scored again and increased their advantage thanks to a goal from Luka Modric in the 90th minute just before the end of the second half, which saw the second half to a 0-3.

At the end of the match, both teams made 3 substitutions each. For Getafe, Jorge Molina, Francisco Portillo and Amath Ndiaye came on for Faycal Fajr, Jaime Mata and Allan Nyom, while Madrid brought on Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior and Luka Jovic to replace Toni Kroos, Isco and Karim Benzema.
