How La Liga would end if it was permaently suspended
There are a couple of different ways the situation could be looked at
Everyone is pending on the coronavirus. Sport has been a victim of the virus too, and is no longer the important thing. But it’s inevitable that people start to wonder about what can happen to the leagues.
Liverpool fans are freaking out because there’s the chance they will not be awarded the title even though they’re 25 points ahead of Man City.
Invalidating the top flight would be unfair on Liverpool the other sides think, and the Telegraph say teams would grant the Reds the title, while blocking relegation too and letting Leeds and West Brom come up to make the league 22 sides.
Spain have been wondering what to do too, and may follow this strategy. However they may also decide to do something else: reverting to the league table at the halfway point, after 19 games.
27th league for Barca
The measure will certainly not leave anyone indifferent. Barça would lift their ninth league in their last twelve years. The first of the Quique Setién era, although the Cantabrian would not have been in charge of a single game on the Barça bench in the first round of fixtures. What should we tell Ernesto Valverde?
It would be the 27th league title for Barça in total, meaning three consecutively, allowing them to continue to be the great dominator of the country in the 21st century. They would win with 40 points. The same Real Madrid would have, who would finish second because of goal difference. Brutal.
Equally Tello’s goal in the final minutes could be the thing that wins Barca the league, if La Liga and the Spanish football federation decide to leave the table as it is on match day 27.
Getafe suffer, Atletico benefi
As well as Barca and Real Madrid Atletico and Sevilla would be in the Champions League if we go back to the half-way point. Real Sociedad and Valencia would go into the Europa League.
Getafe, seventh, would be hurt, because in the current table they are fifth. They’d need Real Sociedad to win a hypothetical Copa del Rey final to qualify that way.
Mallorca, Leganés y Espanyol, a Segunda
The panorama doesn't change for the teams in the drop zone - it's still Mallorca, Leganes and Espanyol. Cadiz would come up along with Almeria and Huesca.
