Barcelona lost for the first time under Ronald Koeman as Jaime Mata's second half penalty proved the difference against Getafe.

Barca will point to decisions going against them but they made life hard for themselves in Madrid on Saturday.

The defeat was their first in La Liga this season after wins against Villarreal and Celta Vigo and the draw against Sevilla.

It will hurt even more given they missed the chance to capitalise on Real Madrid's loss to Cadiz earlier in the day ahead of next weekend's Clasico.

Ronald Koeman made four changes to the side that drew with Sevilla, with Ousmane Dembele, Pedri and Sergino Dest among those coming in.

Barca did OK in the first half. Pedri was especially bright. He produced a great pass for Antoine Griezmann who shot over when he should have done better.

Lionel Messi also hit the post for Barça but the half ended goalless.

The game swung when Getafe were awarded a soft penalty for Frenkie de Jong's challenge on Djene. Mata scored and it was uphill from there for the Catalans.

With the game opening up, it was Getafe who had the better chances on the break. Cucho Hernandez hit the bar and then missed a one-on-one with Neto.

Ansu Fati could have had a penalty at the other end for a foul by Allan Nyom -- who somehow managed to avoid a booking until the 73rd minute -- and Messi stubbed wide in stoppage time.

There was still time for Djene to head against his own bar but Getafe held on for a deserved three points.
