Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Sociedad: Cholo's chaps make no mistake

Atleti are closing in on their first title for seven years

Atletico nearly made a mess of it at the end but they held on for victory, a victory that takes them to the verge of the title.

Diego Simeone’s side last won in 2014 and while in the first half of the season they shone, in 2021 they have suffered, been reined in by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

However, the giants have stumbled in recent weeks and Atletico are recovering.

For most of this game they left Real Sociedad in the shade.

Yannick Carrasco and Angel Correa got the goals in the first half and only poor finishing meant Luis Suarez and others could not add to the score.

Igor Zubeldia pulled a goal back late on and Atletico had to sweat the final stages but in the end they had enough steel to hold on.

Two games to go and two wins will be enough for Diego Simeone’s team. Perhaps less if Madrid slip up on Thursday against Granada.

“We’re tired, we did amazing work in the game and took a step back near the end, but it was a lot of effort to win and we got the three points,” said Atletico captain Koke.
