Meanwhile in Germany Chelsea earned a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to Pedro’s equaliser.

Mouctar Diakhaby's header put Valencia in front at the Emirates but Alexandre Lacazette tucked home Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's cut-back.

Then Lacazette headed home from Granit Xhaka’s cross to turn the game on its head.

The French striker blew two chances to complete his hat-trick but Aubameyang volleyed home at the end to give his team a solid lead to take to Mestalla next week.

"In the first leg we wanted to get a good result, knowing that it would be difficult. We took our moments and the goals in the first half gave us confidence,” said Unai Emery.

"We wanted to win and not to concede a second goal, but we also had to play. The third goal came at the end and for us it was important, but [the tie] continues to be 50-50."

Barca target Luka Jovic reached his 26th goal of the season in all competitions with a superb diving header to send Eintracht ahead against Chelsea.

However Pedro equalised after good work from Ruben Loftus-Cheek to leave the tie evenly poised.

“We scored before half-time and in the second half we had more chances than them,” said Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
