Iniesta among number of players ignored in Ballon d'Or voting

Aguero, De Bruyne, Higuaín, Koke, Muller, Sergio Ramos and Neuer also missed out on votes

The voting carried out by France Football highlighted that the system with which the Ballon d'Or winner is chosen is at the very least controversial. The list of illustrious players ignored by the prestigious award was led by FC Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta, who did not receive any votes.

On the same day that Cristiano Ronaldo won his fourth Ballon d'Or, European football discovered that not one of France Football's correspondents considered that Iniesta had done enough to merit a vote in 2016. For the magazine, the Barcelona captain was worse than Mahrez, Vardy, Pepe, Aubameyang, Rui Patricio, Arturo Vidal, Pogba, Kroos, Modric and Payet, who all received votes.

Iniesta was Spain's best player at the European Championships and captained Barceloan to a league and cup double. Accompanying him on the list of notable absentees were Aguero, Dybala, Higuain, De Bruyne, Godin, Koke, Sergio Ramos, Lloris, Neuer and Muller. The Ballon d'Or may have to work on its criteria. The sensations around this year's award aren't great.
