The relationship between the coach and the club's biggest shareholder has soured

Tuesday's game against Barcelona could be Abelardo's last match on the Alaves bench. According to Cadena Ser, the coach's future is up in the air. If he does leave, Javi Cabello, his No.2, would take over while the club work on a replacement for next season: Asier Garitano is the early favourite.

The problem, according to the report, is the relationship between Abelardo and Josean Querejeta, the club's biggest shareholder. They have not spoken since April 9, when they met to negotiate a new deal for the coach, who has Alaves in the top half of the table.

Querejeta said this week that Abelardo "asked us for double what he's earning now to renew." It's an accusation which shows that things aren't going well. It's not the only reason for the souring of relations between the duo. The sales of Ibai Gomez and Ruben Sobrino in January also had an affect.

If Abelardo does leave, it could be for Real Betis, depending on what happens with Quique Setien. Garitano, meanwhile, the former Real Sociedad coach, is Alaves' target. Ex-Girona and Sevilla boss Pablo Machin's name is also on the table.
