Rashford football's most expensive player as Messi drops to 97th

The Man Utd striker tops the list of the game's most expensive players by CIES

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is the player in the top five European leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue1) with the highest transfer value, according to the CIES Football Observatory.

The CIES study factors in a number of variables to determine the value of a player, including, but not limited to, age, contract duration, sporting level, international status and inflation.

Using that criteria, Barcelona star Lionel Messi, the best player in the world, is ranked 97th because his contract is due to expire this summer. His value is said to be 54 million euros.

Cristiano Ronaldo, of Juventus, is even lower in the list at 131 with an estimated value of 47 million euros.

The podium

At the top of the list is Man Utd and England forward Rashford with a value of 165 million euros. At 23 and with 18 months more on his contract and the option for another year, his value is high.

Second is a Barça target, the Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, at 152 million euros, while the podium is completed by Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, with a cost of 151.6 million euros.

Ansu Fati

The highest-ranked La Liga player is Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix (sixth, 139.2 million euros). To find the highest Barça player -- and Spanish player -- you have to go to 17th, where Ansu Fati appears. The criteria places his value at 108.4 million euros.

Two places below Ansi is Frenkie de Jong (105.7 millones) and other Barça players in the top 100 are Pedri (96.4), Griezmann (83.4), Lenglet (81.5), Ter Stegen (70), Coutinho (60.6), Trincao (60.4) y Messi (54).
