Barcelona 2-1 Atletico: Blaugrana complete perfect season with 30th win

The result mean Atletico will not be playing Champions League football next season

Barcelona's women's team completed a 100 percent season on Sunday as they beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Irene Paredes and Aitana Bonmati got the goals as Barca ended the campaign with 30 wins from 30 games, scoring 159 goals in the process and leaking just 11.

There was almost a late twist here, though, a Atletico sought a point that would have earned them a place in the Champions League.

After Alexia Putellas had missed a penalty following Merel Van Dongen's dismissal, Amanda Sampedro pulled one back for the visitors.

Late in stoppage time, Rasheedat Ajibade was sent through, but Bonmati got back to foul her, earning a straight red card but also confirming Barça's perfect season.

It also denied Atletico the goal that would have taken them into the Champions League, with their place instead going to Real Madrid, who beat Villarreal 1-0 to finish third in the Primera Division.

Madrid join champions Barça and second place among Europe's elite next season, with Atletico missing out for the second year running.
