Toni Kroos struck from the penalty spot after a Presnel Kimpembe handball to give the visitors an early lead in Saint-Denis.
With Sane and Serge Gnabry causing France problems, Germany impressed on the counter-attack, although Kylian Mbappe came close to equalising before half-time when he stretched for Griezmann’s pass but could not quite reach it.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker nearly scored again early in the second half when another burst of pace saw him race into the box but Manuel Neuer did well to deny him.
However it was Griezmann himself who equalised with a mighty header from Lucas Hernandez’s cross, adding the winner from the penalty spot after Matuidi appeared to have been brought down by Mats Hummels.
"I'm disappointed with the result. We were absolutely on a par with the world champions, and could have scored a second goal," said Germany boss Loew.
"France’s individual class is incredible, they scored two goals out of virtually nothing. It was a very good reaction after the Netherlands game.
"Changing a team is a process and you could see today that some of the young players still need a bit of experience."
