Benedito withdraws from race to be the next Barça president

Agusti Benedito announced on Monday he had not gathered enough signatures to stand

Agusti Benedito confirmed on Monday he has dropped out of the race to be Barcelona president.

Benedito, who came second in 2010 and ran again in 2015, has failed to obtain the 2,257 signatures needed to stand in the election on Jan. 24.

For that reason, Benedito's campaign confirmed he would not be returning his forms to the club later on Monday.

In a statement, Benedito thanked Barça members for the support he has received "despite the adverse situation we are living in."

He added that the gathering of signatures "has been carried out in the middle of a pandemic with limits on travel and personal contract" and that "in addition the dates (over Christmas) have been complicated and then over the last week we've had the storm."
