Thomas Partey did in the 16th minute, heading home after Jose Gimenez slung over a cross. But then Vietto hit the post and Torres saw a header saved as Atletico failed to add to their lead.
Lucas Hernandez fouled Lolo Pla in the area and the striker tucked home in the 52nd minute as Elche pulled level, and more poor finishing leaves Diego Simeone's side looking for victory in the second leg at the end of November.
